NTV to invest 90 million euro in train maintenance workshops at Interporto Campano

Contract signed. The transhipment port, the only one in Italy planned by Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, will be fully operational by 2011 and generate 300 new jobs.

NTV and Interporto Campano today signed a contract for the construction of latest-generation High-Speed Train Maintenance Workshops on behalf of Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori. The infrastructure will entail an investment of approximately 90 million Euro.
The Maintenance Workshops, the only plant of its kind planned by NTV in Italy, will occupy a surface area of roughly 150,000 sq.m within the Interporto Campano complex.

The relative contract was signed in the presence of NTV’s Managing Director Giuseppe Sciarrone, the president of Interporto Campano, Gianni Punzo, the Mayor of Nola, Geremia Biancardi and the president of the Campania Region, Antonio Bassolino.

NTV is Italy’s leading private operator in the High-Speed rail passenger transport network, and will begin operations in 2011. Interporto Campano is the only fully operational transhipment port of national relevance in the centre-south of the country that possesses an internal railway station.

The Nola plant will consist of a series of workstations and industrial buildings for the performance of maintenance on the 25 Alstom AGV trains making up the NTV fleet.
Once works are complete, the Maintenance Workshops will occupy roughly 42,000 sq.m of indoor space, plus 55,000 sq.m of fully equipped spaces with tracks. A total of 11 tracks will be built, amounting to about 12,000 metres of rail.
The area will be endowed with all necessary infrastructures, with service buildings and two large depots crossed by tracks, equipped with pit structures, for short and long-distance maintenance activities.

An area of 3,500 sq.m, including two tracks with a fully equipped platform, is also planned for train washing, toilet sanitation and control activities. The internal transport system is designed to separate light vehicle traffic from that of heavy goods vehicles used to transport materials intended for the Maintenance Workshops.

NTV’s Managing Director Giuseppe Sciarrone declared: "The signature of the contract for NTV Workshops in the Interporto Campano complex is a fundamental step in our project. It is our intention to make this plant a strategic centre for southern Italy and an example of technological excellence. NTV will invest 90 million Euro at Nola to build a plant that, when fully operational, will employ 300 highly specialist workers. Interporto Campano will become the nerve centre for the maintenance of our fleet of 25 trains, and will have a positive impact on related activities in the area. Trains will be maintained by the manufacturer, Alstom, during the whole life cycle of the trains (30 years)".

Gianni Punzo, president of Interporto Campano, added: "With the signature of this contract we are undertaking an investment which, I believe, is one of the most relevant in this period in Campania and in the whole of southern Italy, at a time when investments in the south can be counted on the fingers of one hand".
It should also be stressed that this investment has been made possible by the confidence placed by a company of the importance of NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori) in our territory and in the credibility gained in recent years by Interporto Campano, in its capacity as licensee of the Campania Region. For this, credit must go to all NTV shareholders, and in particular to its President, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who was the first to believe in the choice of Nola.
