Herald Tribune, High-speed rail gains traction in Spain

Since when, in 2008, was achieved on high-speed rail link between Barcelona and Madrid, you can move between the two cities in just 2 hours and 38 minutes, while in the car takes six hours. "

Until two years ago, almost 90% of 6 million passengers traveling between Madrid and Barcelona were using the aircraft. But earlier this year, the number of passengers using the train has exceeded the number of those who choose to fly. And the trend continues in this direction.

This change is political and economic benefits for Spain which, like other European countries, has set out to reduce by 20% its emissions of CO2 over ten years. According to analysts, the emissions generated by travelers on a train moving at high speeds are about one fourth of those produced by those who fly or use the car.

"Since there is a rail link, I have not used the plane," says Mr. Martinez, a lawyer for 31 years moving between Madrid and Barcelona twice a week.

"This is not only the environment," says Josep Valls, a professor of marketing at Esade Business School in Barcelona, "is that people are very satisfied with these trains". The trains are really changing the paradigm of travel in Europe.
